There are around 60 species of this parasite that can live in humans. Roundworms usually live in the gastrointestinal tract of human beings; but may also travel from the intestines to live in other parts of the body. Treatment of roundworm infestations can be done effectively with the help of good anthelmintic drugs like Vermox.

Life cycle of roundworms:

The eggs and larvae of roundworms live in the soil and can enter the body of humans via the mouth or the skin. The life cycle of roundworms begins with female worms laying many eggs in the gut. The eggs are then passed out with the stools and may survive in moist soil for several years. The eggs develop into larvae, which again enter the body of a human being due to eating contaminated food. Larvae are very small in size and can travel to different parts of the body via the blood stream. Some of them enter the intestines again and develop into adult worms. A female adult worm again lays eggs and the cycle continues.

Symptoms caused by roundworms:

  • Nutritional problems
  • A lack of general well being and poor growth
  • Tiredness
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loose motions

Some cases of roundworm infections are asymptomatic. If the larvae enter the lungs, there can be cough, breathlessness and wheezing in the chest. Some symptoms of roundworms are specific to the parasites responsible for the infection. Roundworm infection like onchocerciasis can cause blindness. An increased number of roundworms in the intestines can result in an obstruction in the gut. This can lead to serious consequences including perforation. Roundworms can also lodge themselves in the liver or the pancreas causing serious infection in these organs. Intense allergic reactions; causing itching of the skin, swelling of the face and rash on the skin, can also occur due to the hypersensitive reaction of the body’s immune system to the parasite.

Roundworm infections can be prevented by taking proper precautions. People, staying in countries where this infection is more prevalent, should avoid eating salads and raw vegetables. They should eat only cooked food. People should wash their hands properly before eating and cooking. They should wash the vegetables properly before cutting and cooking. Children should not be allowed to play in areas of bad sanitation. Places where human feces are used as a fertilizer should be protected to prevent the entry of children. People should take preventive medications before traveling to high risk countries. Taking these proper hygienic precautions can help in the prevention of roundworm infestations.

  1. It is not uncommon for children to suffer from roundworm infections. We all suffered from it when we were young. My 3 year old son had a roundworm infection some time back; but just following the simple dosage schedule of Vermox helped him to a complete recovery.

  2. I have used Vermox for both my daughters for roundworm infection. The best thing about this medicine is that the dose remains the same for all the patients suffering from roundworms irrespective of their age or weight. Hence, we do not have to bother about calculating the exact dose for our children.

  3. I often travel to different countries. Can you please specify the dose of Vermox as a preventive measure? And please let me know – how often do I need to take it considering that I am a frequent traveler?
