Herbs for Candida

Candida is also called candidiasis and yeast infection. This fungal infection usually strikes moist areas such as the skin and mucous membranes of the body. The infection could affect various parts of the body which include the mouth (oral candidiasis), vagina (vaginal candidiasis), throat, esophagus as well as the gastrointestinal tract. Usually, this infection causes white colored and slightly swollen patches of skin or

mucous membrane, causing itching and irritation. Sometimes, this infection can lead to serious complications in people who have weak immune systems, particularly patients suffering from cancer and AIDS.

Causes for Candida:

The Candida yeast is usually found in the intestine. Its population is controlled by the body’s immune system as well as other beneficial micro-organisms. At times, certain conditions, such as the long term use

of antibiotics, reduce the number of beneficial bacteria, which are important to keep a check on the growth of Candida. This in turn can result in excessive growth of Candida and the occurrence of candidiasis. Some other factors include a weak immune system, excess consumption of sugar, change of the pH levels in the digestive system, and medications like steroids, anti- ulcer medications, oral contraceptives etc.

Ethereal or volatile oils such as peppermint oil and oregano oil can prevent the growth of Candida fungus. The volatile oil from oregano contains oleic acid, thymol, and carvacrol, all of which have anti-fungal properties. The phenols present in oregano oil are extremely concentrated and very effective in fighting fungal infections, bacterial infections, and Candida overgrowth.

Aloe Vera and Echinacea are effective in treating candidiasis since they have an immune stimulating effect.

Black walnut is another natural herb that contains tannins which kills parasites and fungal overgrowth like Candida. Black walnut is very beneficial for people suffering from Candida overgrowth and parasitical infections.

Cinnamon is very beneficial for the patients suffering from oral candidiasis. It contains important terpenoids, which are a potent anti-fungal compound.

Barberries and Rosemary possess antifungal properties which help treat Candida. Rosemary leaves or oil can be used to treat the affected areas of the body.

Thyme oil is known to possess antifungal properties and is suitable for topical use.

Garlic is another herb that offers multiple benefits including treating Candida. Garlic counters fungal infections and stimulates the immune system. It can also help eliminate parasites in the body and regulate blood pressure.

Licorice root is another beneficial herb which can indirectly help treat Candida by preventing sugar cravings.

Chamomile tea helps stimulate the production of stomach acids in order to maintain the balance of acid and

alkali in the digestive system.

Tea tree oil contains natural anti-fungal properties and works by helping to restore the natural balance of bacteria and fungi. Gargling with a mixture of tea tree oil and water can help in treating oral candidiasis. Tea tree oil is also effective in treating vaginal candidiasis.

Golden Seal, Barberry and Oregon grape root contain Berberine which effectively helps to combat Candida and also limit its growth. Berberine functions by stimulating the immune system and making it effective against Candida. In addition to this, these herbs also help in digestion.

Although these herbs are effective in treating Candida, allopathic medications like Diflucan can also prove beneficial. Diflucan is an antibiotic that belongs to a category of antifungals known as Triazoles. Diflucan is used to reduce as well as prevent the growth of fungi and effectively treat various fungal infections (yeast) in the mouth, throat, blood, abdomen, vagina, esophagus, lungs and organs in the body. However, it is recommended that you consult a doctor before using this medication or the herbs mentioned above.

  1. I have always been a believer in the healing power of herbs. Herbs are nature’s gift to mankind and I would recommend the use of herbal remedies because they are safer and cause few or no side effects.

  2. Are these herbs as effective as allopathic medications and are there any side effects? My doctor had prescribed Diflucan for me and it worked very well for my condition. Personally, I would recommend it, but only after consulting a doctor.
