Garcinia indica is a slender evergreen tree with dropping branches and five to eight large seeds.

The fruit has an agreeable flavor and a sweetish sour taste. Kokam contains 10% malic acid and a little tartaric or citric acid.

It is used as a garnish to give a sour taste to curries and also for preparing cooling syrups during the summer months.

Cambojin, garcinol, isogarcinol, Hydroxy Citric Acid and camboginol were identified from the fruit.
