Valsartan (Diovan) is an angiotensin II receptor blocker.

Take Valsartan (Diovan) exactly as directed.

Talk to your doctor before using salt substitutes containing potassium.

If your doctor prescribes a low-salt or low-sodium diet, follow these directions carefully.

Although side effects from Valsartan (Diovan) are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

congestion
cough
diarrhea
difficulty breathing or swallowing
dizziness
excessive tiredness
fainting
fever
headache
lightheadedness
muscle aches
rash
runny nose
sore throat
swelling of the face, eyes, lips, tongue, arms, or legs
trouble sleeping

Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

Potassium-sparing diuretics (eg, amiloride) and potassium supplements because high blood potassium levels may occur and cause listlessness, confusion, abnormal skin sensations of the arms and legs, heaviness of limbs, slowed heart rate, irregular heart rhythm, or stopping of the heart when used with Valsartan (Diovan)
Lithium because its actions and side effects may be increased by Valsartan (Diovan)

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.

If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Valsartan (Diovan) is used to treat high blood pressure.

Valsartan (Diovan) is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement

if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances

if you have dehydration or low blood sodium, or kidney or liver problems

if you have heart failure or you have had a heart attack
