How to use
Avoid taking Verapamil (Calan) with grapefruit juice.
Take Verapamil (Calan) exactly as directed.

Side Effects
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
difficulty breathing
dizziness
fainting
fast heartbeat, palpitations, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, or
lightheadedness
Rare or uncommon:
skin rash
slow heartbeat (less than 50 beats per minute)
swelling of the legs or ankles

Drug Interaction
Do not take Verapamil (Calan) with any of the following:
terfenadine
pimozide
grapefruit juice
dofetilide
disopyramide
cisapride
astemizole
Verapamil (Calan) may also interact with various other medication also. Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines.

Over Dose
In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Notes
Inform your doctor if you have:
slow or irregular heartbeat
pregnant or trying to get pregnant
neuromuscular disease such as muscular dystrophy
liver or kidney disease
heart rhythm disturbances such as sick sinus syndrome, ventricular arrhythmias, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, or Lown-Ganong-Levine syndrome
heart or blood vessel disease
constipation problems
breast-feeding
an unusual or allergic reaction to Verapamil (Calan), other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

Missed Dose
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Uses
Verapamil (Calan) is used to treat irregular heartbeats and high blood pressure.

Other Uses
Verapamil (Calan) is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Storage
Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C / 59 and 86 degrees F.
Protect from light.

Precaution
Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had :
muscular dystrophy
heart/liver/kidney disease
gastrointestinal obstruction (strictures)
If you become pregnant while taking Verapamil (Calan), call your doctor.
If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking Verapamil (Calan).
You should know that Verapamil (Calan) may increase the effects of alcohol and make them last longer.
Check your blood pressure and pulse rate regularly; this is important while you are taking Verapamil (Calan).
