Nifedipine (
Adalat) is a calcium channel blocking agent.

How to use
Take Nifedipine (Adalat) exactly as directed.
Avoid drinking grapefruit juice or eating grapefruit 1 hour before or for 2 hours after taking Nifedipine (Adalat).

Sideeffects
Although side effects from Nifedipine (Adalat) are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
constipation
cough
decreased sexual ability
difficulty breathing or swallowing
dizziness or lightheadedness
enlargement of gum tissue around teeth
excessive tiredness
fainting
fast heartbeat
flushing (feeling of warmth)
headache
heartburn
increase in frequency or severity of chest pain (angina)
muscle cramps
nasal congestion
rash
swelling of the face, eyes, lips, tongue, arms, or legs
upset stomach
yellowing of the skin or eyes

Interaction
Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:
Barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), carbamazepine, or rifampin because they may decrease Nifedipine (Adalat)'s effectiveness
Beta-blockers (eg, propranolol), cimetidine, cyclosporine, fluconazole, fluoxetine, imatinib, itraconazole, ketanserin, magnesium salts (eg, injectable magnesium sulfate), quinazolines (eg, metolazone), quinidine, or ranitidine because side effects, including very low blood pressure, may occur
Beta-blockers (eg, propranolol), cyclosporine, digoxin, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), ketanserin, lithium, theophylline, vinca alkaloids (eg, vincristine) because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased
Quinidine, theophylline, or vinca alkaloids (eg, vincristine) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Nifedipine (Adalat)

Overdose
In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911

Notes
Proper dental care is important while you are taking Nifedipine (Adalat). Brush and floss your teeth and visit the dentist regularly.

Missed Dose
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Precautions
If you're taking Nifedipine (Adalat),
tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to nifedipine or any other drugs
tell your doctor if you have or have ever had heart, liver, or kidney disease
tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
if you become pregnant while taking Nifedipine (Adalat), call your doctor
if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking Nifedipine (Adalat)
