Stavudine (Zerit) is in a class of antiviral medications called nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).

Take Stavudine (Zerit) exactly as directed.

Stavudine (Zerit) may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if either of these symptoms is severe or does not go away:

diarrhea
difficulty moving your hands and feet
headache
numbness, tingling, burning or pain in the hands or feet
rash

Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

Didanosine
Didanosine and hydroxyurea
Methadone
Zidovudine

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Stavudine (Zerit) may interact with other medicines that you take.

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.

If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement

if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances

if you have kidney or liver problems, inflammation of the pancreas, gallstones, or problems with tingling or numbness in your hands or feet

if you drink alcohol

Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Stavudine (Zerit) is used in combination with other antiviral medications to treat HIV infection in patients with or without AIDS.

Stavudine (Zerit) may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Store the capsules at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture.

Stavudine (Zerit) does not stop the spread of HIV to others through blood or sexual contact.

Stavudine (Zerit) is not a cure for HIV infection.
