Description
Paliperidone is not approved by the FDA for the treatment of behaviour problems in older adults suffering from dementia.
Paliperidone is an antipsychotic, which increases the risk of death when used to treat mental problems caused by dementia in elderly patients. Paliperidone is not approved to treat mental problems caused by dementia.
Studies show older adults with dementia who take antipsychotic medication such as paliperidone for mental illness face an increased risk of death during treatment, may also have a greater chance of a stroke or a small stroke during the course of treatment with this medicine. Most deaths were linked to heart problems or infection.
If you experience:
slow or difficult speech
dizziness
feeling faint
weakness/numbness of an arm or leg, call your health care professional immediately.
Speak with your health care professional who has prescribed this medication for the treatment, if you or a family member or someone you care for has dementia and is undergoing treatment for the same with paliperidone.

How to use
Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your health care professional.
Contact your paediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children.
Consult your health care professional about the risks of taking this medicine for your condition before starting on a course with this medicine.

Side Effects
If you notice any of the symptoms listed below or any other symptoms which seem severe/persistent contact your doctor immediately.
weight gain
unusual sweating
passing dark urine/ trouble passing urine/change in the amount of urine passed
nausea
muscle pain or stiffness
changes in blood sugar/vision
feeling light-headed or falls
fever
headache
inner restlessness(unable to keep still)
more/less saliva than normal
stomach upset
unusual movements/spasms/tremor
menstrual irregularity
increase in thirst/hunger
feeling faint
fast/irregular heartbeat
dry mouth
drowsiness
allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
change in sex drive/performance
confusion
cough

Inform your doctor about any other medication you may be taking in any other form.

Over Dose
In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Inform your doctor if you have or have ever had :
chronic constipation/diarrhoea
dementia
diabetes
family history of diabetes
history of stroke
irregular heartbeat
low blood pressure
kidney disease
liver disease
stomach problems such as adhesions/bowel disease/short gut
trouble swallowing
an unusual or allergic reaction to paliperidone/risperidone

Missed Dose
Do not double doses to make up for a missed dose. Consult your health care professional about your missed dose.

Paliperidone is used to treat schizophrenia.

Storage
Store at room temperature between 15-30 degrees C / 59-86 degrees F, away from heat and moisture.

Precaution
If you conceive whilst on a course with Paliperidone medication inform your doctor immediately.
If you need to undergo any kind of surgery, inform your doctor you are taking Paliperidone.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breast feeding or planning to conceive.
Do not treat yourself with OTC medication whilst on a course with Paliperidone, without consulting with your health care professional.
Avoid alcohol and alcohol containing beverages whilst on a course with Paliperidone.
Paliperidone can also affect your blood sugar levels. Consult your health care professional for more information on the same.
Avoid extreme heat, as Paliperidone can cause you to sweat less than is normal. Your body temperature could increase to dangerous levels, which could lead to heat stroke.
Paliperidone may make you drowsy and/or cause diffculty with thinking and movements. Do not drive or do anything such as operating machines unless you know how this medication affects you.
Check your blood pressure and heart rate regularly. Report any abnormalities to your health care professional.
If you experience dehydration, inform your health care professional, immediately. Do not treat yourself.
