Bactrim (SMX-TMP) is an antibiotic combination containing a sulfonamide antibiotic.

How to use
Bactrim (SMX-TMP) combination should not be given to infants less than 2 months of age unless directed by the child's doctor.
Take Bactrim (SMX-TMP) by mouth with or without food.
Use Bactrim (SMX-TMP) as directed by your doctor.

Sideeffects
More common side effects may include:
Hives, lack or loss of appetite, nausea, skin rash, vomiting.
If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible.
Elderly patients, and AIDS patients being treated for Pneumocystis carinii, are more likely to get serious side effects from Bactrim (SMX-TMP).

Interaction
It is important to check with your doctor before combining Bactrim with the following:
Amantadine
Blood thinners such as Coumadin
Cyclosporine
Digoxin
Indomethacin
Methotrexate
Oral diabetes medications(Micronase, Glucotrol)
Pyrimethamine
Seizure medications
Tricyclic antidepressants
Water pills (diuretics)

Overdose
If you suspect an overdose of Bactrim, seek emergency medical attention immediately.

Notes
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:
if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
if you are taking any prescription (seizure medications) or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
if you have liver or kidney problems, blood problems (eg, anemia, porphyria), asthma, or AIDS
if you have severe allergies, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, or an enzyme deficiency
if you at risk for low levels of folate in the blood (eg, you have alcoholism, are elderly, you do not absorb nutrients from food properly, you are in a poor nutritional state, you are taking medicine for seizures)

Missed Dose
Do not double doses to make up for a missed dose.

Uses
Bactrim (SMX-TMP) is used for treating infections caused by certain bacteria.

Other Uses
Bactrim (SMX-TMP) is also used for traveler's diarrhea, and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in AIDS or cancer patients, ask your doctor or pharmacist for more infromation.

Storage
Store at room temperature between 15 and 25 degrees C / 59 and 77 degrees F.
Protect from light and moisture.

Precautions
Diabetes patients - Bactrim (SMX-TMP) may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely. Ask your doctor before you change the dose of your diabetes medicine.
Contact your doctor right away if stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools occur.
