How to use
Consult a doctor for the use of this medication in children.
Valproic acid (Depakote) tablet is to be swallowed whole with a glass of water, and maybe taken with food.
Take exactly as directed.

Side Effects
If you notice any of the symptoms listed below or any other symptoms which seem severe/persistent contact your doctor immediately.

Breathing Difficulty/Swallowing
Confusion
Depression/Suicidal Thoughts
Fever
Joint Weakness
Swollen Glands
Tiny purplish spots on the skin
Unusual Bruising/Bleeding

Inform your doctor if you are allergic to the formulation of this medication or any other medication in any other form.
Alcohol
Antacids
Aspirin
Barbiturate medicines
Blood Thinners
Isoniazid
Medication for Mental Depression
Medication for Psychotic Disturbances
Medication to dissolve blood clots
Sevelamer
Anti Inflammatory drugs
Medication for Seizure(convulsion) or Epilepsy

Over Dose
In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Notes
Drink plenty of fluids whilst on a course with Valproic acid (Depakote).
Wear a MedicAlert Bracelet/Necklace and carry some identification with information about your condition and details of your health care professional.
Do not stop Valproic acid (Depakote) or change the brand without consulting your doctor.

Missed Dose
Do not double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Uses
Valproic acid (Depakote) is used to treat certain type of seizures caused by epilepsy and also to treat mania in people suffering from Bipolar Disorder.

Store it at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture.

Precaution
This medicine is also known by the names Divalproex sodium and Valproate sodium.
This medication may cause serious/life threatening damage to the liver/pancreas, especially in children who are less than 2 years old or patients already suffering from mental retardation, patients already taking more than one medication for seizure disorders, inherited diseases that prevent changing of food to energy in the body.
Valproic acid can cause birth defects, if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breast feeding inform your doctor.
If you conceive whilst on a course with Valproic acid, inform your doctor immediately.
If you experience Nausea, Stomach Pain, Appetite Loss, Vomiting, contact your doctor immediately.
